Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a distinct travel destination in Africa explored not only for its unique Eastern Lowland gorillas but also for mountain climbing/hiking. There are 2 dormant volcanic mountains within this park where it takes its name and they include; Mt. Kahuzi (3317m) and Mt. Biega (2790m).
Mt. Kahuzi
Mt. Kahuzi is one of the 2 dormant volcanic mountains that Kahuzi-Biega National Park protects. It is a dormant volcano, notably had its last active volcanic activity towards the end of Pleistocene. It is the highest of the 2 volcanoes rising up to about 3317m and stretches to cover the Mitumba range in the West shores of Lake Kivu along the Albertine rift. The Eastern side of Kahuzi-Biega National Park lies within the Mitumba mountain slopes.
Mt. Biega
Mt. Biega is second highest of the Kahuzi-Biega National Park’s dormant volcanoes rising up to about 2790m. Hiking to Mt. Biega’s summits is amazing as you come across the park’s distinct vegetation zones. The trek to the volcano’s summits takes about 6 hours to the summit and returning/descending to where you began your trek.
